4 min read

BROOKINGS – Sarah Lippert, Brookings volunteer connections coordinator for the Helpline Center, recently announced the following opportunities for area residents to become more involved in the community through volunteering.

American Red Cross, blood drive ambassador – Brookings

Brookings American Red Cross is looking for blood drive ambassadors. Volunteers must be available during the day on weekdays, hours may vary. Full day shifts are preferred, and half days are available.

Spend the day thanking donors for their gift of life as they give blood at events across eastern South Dakota. Volunteers assist with donor check-in and registration as well as provide drinks and snacks to donors after they have given. Training provided free of charge and background check required.

Feeding Brookings, distribution volunteer

Feeding Brookings helps provide food to those in need. Every Thursday from 3:45-5 p.m. the organization distributes the food received from organizations such as TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program), Feeding South Dakota, Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, local churches and community donations. Volunteers would help pull wagons alongside guests and carry out food to their cars so that their only concern while they are there is choosing which foods they’d like for the week. Having volunteers help with this ensures that it goes smoothly doing distribution as the organization receives more than 110 families per week.

ICAP Brookings, Meals on Wheels back-up drivers

Inter-Lakes Communiuty Action Partnership is seeking volunteers who are interested in being back-up drivers for their Meals on Wheels Program. They deliver throughout Brookings County Mondays-Fridays between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Volunteers must possess a valid driver’s license.

Brookings County Food Pantry

Brookings County Food Pantry is open to serve clients Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 1-4:30 p.m. Volunteers will assist in the intake and organization of food items at the Brookings County Food Pantry. This will include accepting donations, stocking shelves, rotating inventory and marking labels. Opportunities available 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
