Digital transformation is both a decisive game changer and a great enabler. Not only has its expanse become all-pervasive, but also digitization is indispensable in almost every domain, from the most complex undertakings to the simplest quotidian tasks.
Location and geospatial technologies are at the heart of digital transformation today and we can’t think of any development without spatial information and location data.
Rapid advancements in technology have made the world more interconnected and lead to the materialization of what was once considered inconceivable.
And this is not the denouement! The current pace of digital transformation will soon surpass all the current developments and foster unprecedented innovation, as we will enter the age of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
At the plenary session of GeoSmart India 2019, light was shed on how geospatial technology is driving digital transformation throughout the globe and also in India, which needs geospatial technologies more than ever for the realization of the ambitious Vision New India.
Data is supposed to be the new oil in the age of 4th Industrial revolution and India has to capitalize on this for continuing the march to progress.
Geospatial at the core
Explaining the growing relevance of geospatial data, Lt General Anil Kapoor VSM, Directorate General of Information Systems, Indian Army, said, “When we look at information backed with geospatial data, the advantage that we have is time, space and trends become absolutely clear. All organizations thrive on geospatial in terms of decision-making. Be it mapping or creating roadmaps”.
He also believes that we cannot look at geospatial in isolation, and we have to look at the complete ICT( Information& Communication technology) paradigm.
He also says, “when it comes to incorporating geospatial, we need a minimalistic approach: cost-efficient, resource efficient and time efficient”.
These days convergence of different technologies is the way ahead and through convergence, we can create a truly agnostic system. Lt. General Kapoor believes that convergence and the approach of minimalism in systems will be truly empowering for everyone.
While envisioning geospatial-powered digital transformation cost-effectiveness should be constantly at the back of our minds. This would set up the complete paradigm of geospatial information.
Lt. General Kapoor says, “We have got a transforming landscape from business intelligence to location intelligence to AI. Geospatial information in a thematic visualization is very important.”
Geospatial innovations will enable us to fix time and space.
Today what we find is that academia and industry put together there is a way for contemporary technologies drawn into the environment, said Lt.General Kapoor.
Talking about an alternative, he further added, “another method is the procedure for collaborating and providing negotiations.
He is also a proponent of restarting legacy in future solutions and a comprehensive engagement in terms of solutions. Proliferation of technologies will eventually open many new doors.
Taking a holistic view
Anant Sayana, Chief Digital officer, L&T, opines that a whole bunch of digital technologies has completely overrun the world.
Exploring future possibilities, he said, “we can make consistent and reliable use of the technologies. Geospatial technologies have moved ahead very rapidly. Technology is moving at breakneck speed”.
Mapping and location technology has changed radically over the last few years and this forces us to change our approach, devise a new methodology and implement a newer vision, said Sayana while paraphrasing Albert Einstein who said that you can’t use an old map to explore a new world.
Tanvil Sundriyal, IAS,CEO, MAP_IT & MD, MPSEDC, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, said Innovation can’t be looked at in silos. What is happening in cloud or say Big Data is not distinct from what is happening with GIS. A lot of companies in GIS sectors have their applications in Cloud.”
She also said that we need to develop more scalable applications that consume less time.
