DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) A beacon in the community reached a huge milestone today—celebrating more than a half-century of service.

Hawk Houston held its annual meeting and recognition banquet at their Youth Enrichment Center in Dothan Thursday evening.

Donors, volunteers and supporters were recognized for their commitment to enriching the lives of children in the Wiregrass.

Hawk Houston’s Executive Director, Altha Newman, said keeping the organization afloat has been difficult, since losing their membership charter with the Boys and Girls Club.

However, thanks to fundraisers, donations and the generosity of the community, Hawk Houston is proud to be celebrating 55 years of giving back to area youth.

“It’s a blessing. It’s well deserved,” said Newman.

“Alveta Houston Hawk was a legend in this community, and her desire was to give back. She always said that great things would come from it. So, great things have come Hawk Houston, and we’re looking forward to more great things coming,” Newman said.

Hawk Houston handed out awards to 11 people Thursday night, including a Community Partnership Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The organization offers youth programs year round, as well as summer programs.
