PORT ANGELES — First Step Family Support Center will receive support from United Way of Clallam County through $10,000 in allocations from the Community Care Fund and $4,862.67 from community donor designations, totaling $14,862.67, the organization reported.
The funds will benefit programming for families from Brinnon to Forks.
Among the more than 18 programs to promote the healthy development of children and families is the Drop-In Center at 325 E. Sixth St., in Port Angeles.
This Drop-in Center offers parents support from other parents and from the staff and volunteers that run it, the organization said in a press release.
It provides resources such as clothing, diapers, household goods, books and food.
It also is a place for parents to learn about their child’s development and a place to let their children play with toys and books.
First Step also has several home visiting programs such as the Parent Child Assistance Program that works with substance abusing families and the Parents as Teachers program that provides twice a month home visiting services to higher-risk low-income families.
The program focuses on child development, child screening, goal-setting and providing referrals to other community resources.
Several parenting classes are offered throughout the year and weekly play groups as well as a program that reaches out to isolated families.
First Step programs also focus on child safety. These include the Safe Sleep program and the Car Seat Safety project.
