EMMETSBURG, Iowa (SUBMITTED) – Emmetsburg Feed Our Kids has established a new fund with the Palo Alto County Community Foundation. The Feed Our Kids – Emmetsburg Endowment Fund will support the organization’s mission to provide meals to children in Palo Alto County.

During a recent presentation, Cindy Magee, co-chairperson of the Emmetsburg Feed Our Kids organization, thanked the Palo Alto County Foundation and the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Committee personally and on behalf of her co-chairperson Angie Strohman and their committee members, for the opportunity of establishing an endowment fund.

The Emmetsburg Feed Our Kids organization provides food for food-insecure children; children who are hungry because they do not receive enough to eat over the weekend.  These children are identified through the free and reduced lunch program and by classroom teacher recommendations. When children are nourished: They are healthier, can focus easier, display better study habits, and are less likely to miss class.

A single fundraiser launched the Feed Our Kids program.  Private and local organizations continue to donate annually to help with funding costs of the program which average $1680.00 per month to provide food for approximately sixty students weekly.  Food for the program is obtained by partnering with Iowa Food Bank, a state food pantry and with private funding. The individual donations are used to purchased quality food items from a county grocery store to enhance the meals the student receives.  Students receive a minimum of four meals and two snacks that are kid-friendly in preparation and nutritious.  Volunteers for the Emmetsburg Feed Our Kids program package and place food into indistinguishable backpacks that are discreetly placed in students school locker on Fridays. Volunteers deliver the food to Emmetsburg Catholic School and the Emmetsburg Middle School.

Using their intuitive skills, Cindy, Angie and their dedicated committee members Katie Schmidt, Patty Kelly, Sally Jordan, Kathy Jackson and Cindy Flannegan have been searching for a source of funding that would guarantee the continuation of this needed food program. Learning about matching funds available through the Palo Alto County Community Foundation, who work in conjunction with the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Committee, the Emmetsburg Feed Our Kids program decided to establish an endowment fund.  The funds placed in the newly established Feed Our Kids endowment fund assures the continuation of the purpose of the organization; providing food to food insecure children.

Donors to the newly established Feed Our Kids endowment fund are eligible for the Endow Iowa 25% state tax credit and federal deductions for charitable giving.  Go to fund.cfneia.org/feedourkids for more information or to make an online gift to the fund.  Checks may be made to: Feed Our Kids-Emmetsburg Endowment Fund and mailed to: Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, 3117 Greenhill Circle, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50313. All donations provide funds to this local non-profit organization making a difference for kids.
