On the Pakistan front, the CDS said there was a plan to have a separate command for J&K. The other could be on the border south of Jammu.
Rawat said the planned air defence command, which will combine the air assets of the Army, IAF and Navy, will be rolled out by mid-2021. The peninsular command will be rolled out by the end of the next year. He added India’s theatre commands will be ready by 2022.
Rawat said the peninsular command, with air assets and Army’s support, will be under a Navy commander. “The security of Indian Ocean Region has to be dealt with by one commander and he will not be required to get approval from Delhi for operational matters,” said Rawat.
Rawat said the proposed air defence command will have air assets such as missiles from the Army. The Navy will also be a part of it. He said a team headed by the Vice Chief of IAF was conducting a study which would be over by March 31. “We should have the shape of the air defence command by the first half of next year,” Rawat said.
The CDS said the government was planning a separate training and doctrinal command, similar to the structure in the United States.
