02/24/2020 India (International Christian Concern) – According to a statement by a senior Trump administration official, President Donald Trump will rise the issues of religious freedom and the protection of religious minorities with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during this two-day state visit to India.
At a press briefing on Friday, the official said, “He will raise these issues, particularly the religious freedom issue, which is extremely important to this administration. I think that the President will talk about these issues in his meetings with Prime Minister Modi and note that the world is looking to India to continue to upholds its democratic traditions, respect for religious minorities.”
“This is something that is important to the President and I’m sure it will come up,” the official added.
Since taking power in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Modi, has overseen a regime in which religious intolerance and attacks on religious minorities have dramatically increased. Many point to the BJP’s ideological commitment to Hindu nationalism, which in its most extreme forms views India as a nation for Hindus only, to explain this rise in intolerance and attacks.
According to the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) India, India’s Christian community documented 328 violent attacks in 2019. This represents a significant escalation in anti-Christian violence when compared to the 147 violent attacks documented in 2014, the year the BJP and Prime Minister Modi came to power.
Will President Trump raising the issues of religious freedom and the protection of religious minorities help curb the rising intolerance and violence?
