NEW DELHI: The Sino-Pak attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue through the United Nations has once again met with a failure, after a UN Security Council meeting, convened by China to discuss the matter under ‘Any Other Business’, ended without any outcome.

“Pakistan’s attempts to internationalise this issue through the United Nations has once again failed to achieve any results,” T S Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the UN, told ET from New York.

“Another attempt by Pakistan fails! In today’s meeting of UN Security Council (UNSC), which was closed, informal, not recorded, and without any outcome, almost all countries underlined that J&K was bilateral issue & did not deserve time and attention of Council,” Tirumurti had tweeted following the meeting.

China had called for a discussion on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in the UN Security Council (UNSC) under ‘Any Other Business’ on Wednesday, coinciding with the first anniversary of scrapping of special status to Jammu and Kashmir and its bifurcation into two union territories–Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Sources said that the US took the lead and other UNSC members also joined in opposing China’s moves. These members were of the opinion that the Kashmir issue was not a matter for the UNSC to discuss and is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan, ET has reliably gathered.

Pakistan has been unsuccessfully trying to garner international support against India for withdrawing Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and bifurcating it into two Union territories. This was the first attempt by Sino-Pak alliance to raise the matter in UNSC under the ‘Any Other Business’ category since India was elected to UNSC as a non-permanent member for a two year term beginning on January 1, 2021.

In January this year, China, on behalf of its ally Pakistan, had made a similar attempt to raise the Kashmir issue under ‘other matters’ during closed consultations in the Security Council Consultations Room. The move came to a naught as China stood alone on that occasion too.

MEA on its part stated, “We have noted that China initiated a discussion in the UN Security Council on issues pertaining to the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This was not the first time that China has sought to raise a subject that is solely an internal matter of India. As on such previous occasions, this attempt too met with little support from the international community. We firmly reject China’s interference in our internal affairs and urge it to draw proper conclusions from such infructuous attempts”.

Pakistan’s attempts are not yielding any result as a lie repeated a hundred times will not become the truth, Tirumurti said.

Contrary to Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s statement, there has been no formal meeting of the Security Council on the India-Pakistan issue even once for the past 55 years, recalled the senior diplomat.

On Wednesday, MEA had stated that China does not have any locus standi on J&K and advised it not to comment on internal matters of other nations. “We have noted the comments of the Chinese MFA spokesperson on the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chinese side has no locus standi whatsoever on this matter and is advised not to comment on the internal affairs of other nations,” MEA spokesperson said after China alleged “any unilateral change to the status quo” in Jammuand Kashmir is “illegal and invalid”.
