CANAAN — A new, not-for-profit organization called Canaan Neighbors Helping Neighbors is underway in Canaan thanks to the generous donation of residents who wished to remain anonymous.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown into sharp relief the severe hardship that can befall individuals and families through no fault of their own and the holes in the government social safety net intended to relieve it. The donors, generous Canaan residents, believe that CNHN will contribute to the well-being, stability and safety of our community, and they have offered to start the ball rolling with a challenge donation of $10,000. Residents, volunteers or those who work in Canaan can apply for funds and anyone can donate to help the non-profit meet the challenge goal.

A working committee has been formed to carry out the wishes of the donors and to accept donations and applications for assistance. The committee members are Ginny Nightingale, Wayne Gearing, Pat Liddle, Erin Moore and Kristen Van Note, all Canaan residents. Town of Canaan Supervisor Brenda Adams is an ex officio member of the committee.

Funds received by CNHN will be held in an interest-bearing account and dispensed by the committee once applications are received and reviewed. Payments of up to $250 are available for each family annually and can be used for necessities or to pay a bill. Residents, or those who volunteer or work in Canaan who wish to apply for assistance should email the committee at CNHN@canaannewyork.org or write to them at CNHN, P.O. Box 459, Canaan, NY 12029. Requests should include name, address, phone number, amount requested and the specific reason for the request. All applications will be kept confidential.

Canaan Neighbors Helping Neighbors (CNHN) will be a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations will therefore be fully tax-deductible. In order to make this opportunity available immediately, it will be contained temporarily under the umbrella of the Queechy Lake Club, Inc, which already has 501(c)(3) status. Therefore, anyone joining their neighbors in this endeavor should make the donation to Queechy Lake Club Inc. by credit card at queechylake.org, or by check made out to Queechy Lake Club Inc. and mailed to QLC, PO Box 92, Canaan, NY 12029. The check can also be mailed to Canaan Town Hall at PO Box 459, Canaan, NY 12029. Any amount will be welcome, however small. Donors should Include their name, address, phone number and email address with the check and make it clear that it is for CNHN by including that in the memo.

In order to notify the community of this new non-profit, a Facebook page has been set up at Canaan-NY Neighbors Helping Neighbors. In addition, the Queechy Lake Club has information at www.queechylake.org and postcards were sent to all the landowners in the Town of Canaan.

Anyone wishing to get more information can email the committee at CNHN@canaannewyork.org or send a note to CNHN at PO Box 459, Canaan NY 12029.
