The USO, the non-profit organization founded in 1941 dedicated to strengthening America’s military by annually keeping millions of service members and their families connected to family, home and country, announced the appointment of its new West Region Board Chair, Marilyn Cohen. Cohen brings over 40 years of financial experience as one of the country’s top bond managers to the organization’s West board leadership team.

“The USO could not exist without the generosity of donors and volunteers, and Marilyn is a shining example of both,” said USO West President Bob Kurkjian. “I am very pleased to have her as the new chair of the USO West Region board and look forward to working with her to grow the success story that has been the USO as we approach the 80th year of serving our troops and their families.”

As founder and CEO of Envision Capital Management in El Segundo, CA, a boutique firm that specializes in fixed income investments, and as the Forbes Magazine bond columnist for over 25 years, Cohen’s extensive financial experience pairs well with the USO organization’s mission and goals as board members are responsible for securing funding resources for the organization. The West Region of the USO consists of nine states, and 35 USO Centers and Transitions Program locations and five mobile USO units. With support of over 2,000 volunteers, in 2019 the USO in the West delivered nearly 1.8 million service instances. The USO ensures that our troops and their families are supported every day of the year from worldwide deployments to family support programs and community events. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the USO has been rapidly responding to provide vital support to our service members and their families.

Cohen and her husband, Chris Malburg, have been generous supporters and are two-star sponsors of the Bob Hope USO at LAX Center. The state-of-the-art USO Center typically hosts over 100,000 service members and families annually and offers a refuge for our military while transiting. Their early commitment of a quarter-million dollars enabled Bob Hope USO to leverage additional donors and execute a record-breaking capital campaign to open the new USO Center in the historic Theme Building at LAX in 2018.

Cohen’s involvement with the USO first began in 2015 when she and her therapy dog Dove made their first visit to the Bob Hope USO at LAX. Since then, Cohen and Dove have continued to put a smile on the faces of thousands of troops and families, as well as provided comfort to scores of grieving family members as part of the USO’s Families of the Fallen Team. Along with volunteering at the USO, Marilyn and Dove have frequently visited the Wadsworth VA Hospital, providing pet therapy to patients there.

“I am honored to join a distinguished group of leaders at this incredible organization dedicated to serving our military and their families,” said Cohen. “The USO is the force behind our forces and I am proud to be able to be a volunteer and donor who can serve and support our heroes through this remarkable organization.”

Cohen joins an accomplished USO Board of Directors including Joe Craver, Retired American Red Cross Executive; George Gould, an independent investor & member of the Board of Visitors at US Naval Academy; Doug Graham, Vice President of Advancement Program Development Strategic and Missile Defense Systems at Lockheed Martin Space; Wade Pope, Senior Project Executive at Martin-Harris Construction Company; Scott Santoro, Vice President Los Angeles Sales West & Australia at Delta Air Lines; Major General Stephen T. Sergeant, USAF (ret.), CEO at Marvin Test Solutions; and Heather Shelbrack, Public Information Manager at Sky Harbor International Airport.
