India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to deepen their defence cooperation via joint production and mutual trade.

The two countries participated in a webinar titled, ‘Indian Defence Industry Global Outreach for Collaborative Partnership: India-UAE Defence Cooperation’, which saw participation from over 180 people.

More than 100 virtual exhibition stalls were also set up in the webinar.

The webinar was organised under the support from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence (MoD) via the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM).

The officials and ambassadors spoke about the relationship between the two countries in the webinar.

Defence co-operation is said to be beneficial for both countries.

Joint Secretary (DIP) Sanjay Jaju stated that they are not ‘advocating protectionism’, under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan.

He added: “On the contrary, we are emphasising on openness and inter-linkages so that our companies could become a part of the global supply chains and foreign companies could have a role in Indian defence manufacturing ecosystem.”

The webinar was a part of a series with other friendly foreign countries, in a bid to enhance defence exports.

It also aims to reach a defence export goal of $5bn over the coming five years.

From the Indian side, L&T Defence, GRSE, OFB, MKU, Bharat Forge and Ashok Leyland made presentations regarding the major platforms or equipment.

STREIT Group, Rockford Xellerie, EDGE, TAWAZUN and Marakeb Technologies from the UAE also made presentations.
