Animal Care Services

Through Dec. 13, dogs can be adopted for $25 and cats for $15 as part of an “Empty the Shelters” holiday special. Not ready to adopt? Applications are open for foster pet parents who provide temporary shelter and care to an animal while it’s waiting to be adopted. sanantonio.gov/animal-care

CASA

Child Advocates San Antonio is still training volunteer advocates through online sessions. Register to participate in a class so that you can be paired with a child or family in the foster care system and help advocate to the court for their best interest and needs. Volunteers are asked to commit to one year. Not up for volunteering? A $50 donation helps to provide training for a volunteer advocate. On Dec. 12-13, shop through Kendra Scott’s Give Back program and 20 percent of sales will go toward CASA when you enter GIVEBACK-0ANP at checkout (or mention CASA in the store). casa-satx.org

The Children’s Shelter

While volunteering opportunities have been reduced due to COVID-19, you can still provide for children who’ve been placed at the shelter through the foster care system. Order the organization’s most needed items through Amazon, donate your own gently used items to its thrift shop, FOUND in Southtown, or provide monetary donations that support things like therapy, parenting classes and more. childrensshelter.org

Elf Louise Christmas Project

Volunteer positions have been filled for the year but donations still are being accepted to help provide toys to families in need. Rather than Santa deliveries like in year’s past, families will pick up gifts for their children this year. Give through an Amazon or eBay wish list or through PayPal. elflouise.org

Family Service

This nonprofit’s annual holiday Adopt-A-Family event helps provide families in need with gifts plus household essentials and other basic needs items. Adopt a specific family and receive a wish list and list of needed items or shop through the organization’s Amazon WishList and help it provide for families in need. family-service.org

FVPS Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter

Adults can still volunteer by performing administrative and office work. Donations also help support women and children at this nonprofit. A $25 donation, called “The Gift of Play,” provides a book and toy for a child at the shelter. With $50, “The Gift of Hope,” you’ll be giving warm blankets, linens and towels to families at the shelter. The “Gift of New Beginnings,” a $100 donation, provides new clothes and shoes a family starting over after experiencing abuse. fvps.org

Haven for Hope

To ensure everyone’s safety, Haven for Hope is limiting donations to only COVID-related and most needed items, including things like hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and hygiene kits. Before dropping off items, donors need to call to make an appointment. havenforhope.org

The Salvation Army

The #RescueChristmas initiative at this nonprofit provides multiple online and in-person options for helping families in the community who are struggling. Sign up for the Red Kettle Challenge and set up your own virtual kettle where family and friends can donate. Locals can also vote for their favorite kettle in the “Parade of Kettles” by donating online. Its Angel Tree program gives families the chance to shop for kids in need and there are other volunteer opportunities. salvationarmysanantonio.org

San Antonio Food Bank

This nonprofit has seen demand for food double since the pandemic began and they’ve announced they have a critical need for volunteers in December. Register to help at a distribution event, at the Food Bank’s Urban Farm, in its warehouse or as part of a community kitchen. Check out which shifts still need filled and sign up here. safoodbank.org

South Texas Blood and Tissue Center

San Antonio continues to see a critical need for blood donations as the pandemic persists. Register to donate and support patients being treated locally for everything from COVID-19 to cancer, transplants, surgeries and other issues. biobridgeglobal.org
