The Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the first launch of the medium range surface to air missile (MRSAM) for the Indian Army.

The maiden launch was carried out from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the Coast of Odisha.

During the test, the missile registered a direct target hit. It destroyed a high-speed unmanned aerial target, according to DRDO.

The target was employed to imitate an aircraft.

DRDO said in a statement: “The complete Fire Unit has been used during the launch in the deliverable configuration.”

The launch was witnessed by a team from the Indian Army.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that “India has attained a high level of capability in the indigenous design and development of advanced weapon systems”.

The weapon system’s performance and the direct target hit were validated by mission data.

The data was captured by range instruments such as Radar, Telemetry and Electro-Optical Tracking System.

The Indian Army version of MRSAM weapon system features Command post, Multi-Function Radar and Mobile Launcher system.

The surface to air missile has been developed jointly by DRDO, India and Israel’s IAI.

DRDO chairman and Secretary Department of Defence R&D Dr G Satheesh Reddy congratulated the team on the achievement.

He also praised their efforts to successfully demonstrate the MRSAM Army weapon system’s performance and “in realising the system within record time and meeting the committed schedule”.
